Williamsburg, VA – The Towson University men's golf team has wrapped up first day of play for the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, finishing in sixth place with a 580 (+11) after rounds of 287 and 293. The Tigers rank second for amount of pars made at 111, and lead the field for par 5s with an average of 4.57.
Farleigh Dickinson took first place after rounds of 288 and 285 to finish with a 573 (+5).
Justin Griffith led the Tigers day one efforts, finishing tied for 11
th after shooting 70 and 72. Griffith finished 1-under for the first 18 holes, offsetting three bogeys with four birdies, two of which were back-to-back. The Pennsylvania native added an eagle during the back 18. He is tied for second in the tournament for par 4s, averaging 3.91.
Jeremy Summerson was next for Towson, tying for 25
th after finishing 4-over. He shot a 71 for the first round, notching four birdies.
Poonyapat Nantsupawat completed the day tied for 29
th at 5-over. The freshman played fairly steady golf for the first round, making par on 13 out of the 18 holes to shoot a 72.
Brad Riley tied with Nantsupawat for 29
th after rounds of 75 and 72. He tallied six birdies across the 36 holes. The senior is tied for first in the tournament for par 5s, averaging 4.33.
Ending the first day tied for 35
th was
Julian Gonzalez after even rounds of 74 and 74. The graduate student recorded five birdies for the day.
Jai Sheth, competing as an individual, finished in 75
th place. He improved by nine strokes in between rounds, recording three birdies for the day.
The Tigers remain play tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m.
