Men's Golf Improves By 16 Shots During Second Round of CAA Championship

St. Helena Island, S.C. – The Towson University men's golf team saw a 16-stroke improvement from the first round on the second round of the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship Monday at the Dataw Island Club, moving up one spot to finish in seventh place after posting 291 (+3). Four Tigers improved from their first-round scores by at least four strokes.

If the top four scorers shoot 312 or better tomorrow, the team will finish the season with the second-best scoring average in program history – trailing the 2004-05 team, who averaged 291.3 per round. Through today's round, the 2022-23 Tigers are averaging 293.35.

UNCW shot 14-under par as a team to pass Drexel to take the lead in the tournament after 36 holes. UNCW's Patrick Sparks sits atop currently at 11-under after rounds of 68-65. .

How it Happened
Brad Riley was Towson's top finisher for the second day in a row with a 1-under par 71. The senior notched four birdies during the round, including back-to-back on No. 12 and 13. Riley is currently tied for 15th place.

Jeremy Summerson shot an even par 72 and is tied for 19th place in the standings. The senior was 1-under on the back nine, with birdies on No. 13 and 17.  Summerson can establish a new single season scoring record if he shoots 69 or better in tomorrow's final round.

Justin Griffith and Julian Gonzalez finished with rounds of 74 (+2).

Gonzalez parred the first eight holes and was 1-under par after birdies on the 10th and 12 holes.

Griffith tied Nyasha Mauchaza for the most rounds played in program history on Monday at 119. He will break the record Tuesday. Griffith has made the travel team for all 44 tournaments during his Towson career.

Ryan Peters rounded out the squad, shooting 82 (+10). Peters round included back-to-back birdies on No. 2-3.

Quotes from Coach Mike Larkin
"Much better today, much more of what we're looking for. When you think about it – if we had done that yesterday which would have put us at six over, which would've put us in the mix to make a run of things. Unfortunately we didn't so it leaves us in a spot where we would have to do something historical to make a run at it and obviously that's what we'll try to do – but overall much better today."

Up Next
The final round of play takes place Tuesday morning beginning with Peters at 8:50 a.m. followed by Gonzalez (9:00), Griffith (9:10), Summerson (9:20) and Riley (9:30).
