Austin, Texas – Towson University gymnast
Lauren Bolen has been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Second Team as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), announced Thursday afternoon.
49 total athletes were recognized, separated into three teams. Bolen was one of 26 honorees to have maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
With this nomination, Bolen becomes the fourth gymnast in Towson history to be named Academic All-America® by CSC. Previous honorees include Sari Lehmuskallio (1996), Wendy Weaver (1991) and Anne Sudgen (1991). The senior is also the first Towson athlete to be honored as an Academic All-American® since 2020, when Carly Tellekamp of women's lacrosse was named to the second team.
Bolen was named to the CSC Academic All-District® At-Large Team in May along with teammates
Clara Hong and
Grace Vaillancourt. Criteria for this award included maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher and competing in at least half of the team's competitions.
As an information systems major with a track in business, Bolen held a 4.0 GPA for all eight semesters of her undergraduate career. The Point of Rocks, Maryland native was the 2023 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Scholar-Athlete of the Year, named to the All-EAGL Scholastic Team for three consecutive years (2021,22,23), the EAGL All-Academic team her freshman year (2020) and the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-America lists for three consecutive seasons (2021-22, 2020-21, 2019-20). Bolen graduated from Towson this spring summa cum laude.
In the gym, Bolen has had continuous success throughout her time with the Tigers. She began her career as an all-around, competing in all four events during her freshman and sophomore season. As an upperclassman she transitioned to specialize in primarily vault and beam, earning First Team All-EAGL on vault for three consecutive seasons. For her top-10 performances at EAGL Conference Championships she was named to the Second Team All-Tournament on beam (2023) and vault (2021,2023).
The recent graduate has been a prominent competitor for Towson, competing in 53 meets total for the Black & Gold. Bolen has been the leadoff on beam at every single meet in her collegiate career except for one. Her career best on vault (9.9) ranks fifth highest in program history, hitting that mark twice. For her senior season, Bolen joined Towson gymnastics' 1000 point club, scoring 1500 points for the Tigers.
