COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Towson University tennis team wrapped up the first day of matches at the Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Maryland on Friday afternoon. The Tigers picked up four singles wins, each coming from freshmen.
Singles
In flight four, No. 2
Ashira Murray went against No. 1 Solange Skeene of George Washington. The sophomore dropped the match to Skeene, falling 6-2 and 6-4.
No. 6
Sania Suchinsky competed in the same flight, dropping 6-2 in both sets against No. 5 Veda Prapurna of George Mason. In her second match of the day, Suchinsky automatically advanced after Howard's Selah Stibbins withdrew due to injury.
In flight six, No.3
Kiersten Tambe swept No.4 Amari O'Brien of Mount St. Mary's 6-1 and 6-3. The freshman is slated to play George Mason's Mary Young tomorrow.
No. 7 Chandre Boshoff competed in flight six as well, taking her opponent No. 8 Maitree Rout of George Mason to three sets. Boshoff took the win in the first set, 6-3, before Rout bounced back to take set two 6-2. Ultimately Boshoff fell to Rout 12-10 in the tiebreaker.
No. 5
Gaia Montecchi won both sets against No.6 Lauren Splett of George Mason in the seventh flight, 6-3 and 6-0. The Tiger freshman is set to compete against Loyola's Emma Roeck.
No.7
Chloe Courtnage fell to Loyola's No.8 Elena Hartley in the eighth flight, 6-1 and 6-3.
Aubrey Carper and
Sofia Anderson both competed in flight nine. No.4 Carper defeated No.3 Megan Etienne in dominant fashion, 6-1 and 6-0. She advances to play Brooklyn Siegel of George Mason. No.6 Anderson took a victory as well, winning both sets against No.5 Addison Kemerer of Loyola 6-3, 6-3.
Doubles
No.6 Chandre Boshoff and
Gaia Montecchi took on No.5 Julia Jeffrey and Lauryn Hall of Morgan State. The duo fell 6-4. No.12
Olivia Rothfeld and
Kiersten Tambe went against No.11 Mille Haagensen and Laura Villanueva of West Virginia, losing 6-4.
The team will continue the tournament tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
