Tennis Opens 2025 Spring Season Versus Richmond Sunday Night

TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University women's tennis team starts the 2025 spring season on Sunday night when the Tigers host Richmond at the Coppermine Bare Hills indoor facility. The match begins at 6 p.m. The Spiders opened the '25 campaign with a 4-3 victory over the Naval Academy on Jan. 26.

Towson will also host Bucknell (Feb. 8), Johns Hopkins (Feb. 21) and Delaware State (Mar. 8) at Coppermine Bare Hills.

FALL '24 RECAP
During the fall, the Tigers played in five events and defeated Rider 5-2 in a head-to-head match. Sophomores Ashira Murray and Chandrè Boshoff as well as freshmen Kiersten Tambe and Gaia Montecchi qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship in October.

THE VETERAN
On a roster with seven first-year student-athletes and two sophomores, graduate student Olivia Rothfeld is the most experienced player. After spending her freshman year at Georgia Southern, Rothfeld has been a mainstay in the lineup the last three and a half seasons – winning 33 matches, including a victory over Rider during the fall. Playing at No. 2 singles as a junior in 2023, she led the team with eight wins and had six singles victories on court No. 4 last season.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Nearly half of the 11-person 2024-25 roster was born outside of the United StatesBoshoff hails from George, South Africa, which is 8,100 miles from campus. Montecchi is a native of, Bango a Ripoli, Italy which is 4,300 miles from Towson. Murray and Tamzin Pountney were born and raised in England, 3,500 miles from campus. Chloe Courtnage is from Calgary, Canada, which is 2,300 miles away. 

DID YOU KNOW?
Towson head coach Jamie Peterson was two-time team captain on the Towson men's tennis team from 1991-95 and finished his career with a 64-35 record, the fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in program history. Peterson helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1993 and 1994.
