Towson Tennis Set for Three Matches This Week

Towson, Md. - The Towson University women's tennis team will play three matches in the three different states this week. On Wednesday, the Tigers travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on Mary Washington. Two nights later, Jamie Peterson's squad host Fairfield at the Coppermine Bare Hills indoor facility. Towson will then head up Interstate 95 on Saturday to face Swarthmore College.

Mary Washington is ranked 39th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) NCAA Division III preseason poll. The Eagles opened the spring campaign with a 4-3 exhibition loss to George Mason last Friday. Junior Addison Felts competed at the 2025 NCAA Tennis Championships in the singles flight.

Fairfield is 0-4 this season after losses to UConn, St. John's, Rhode Island and Army West Point. Sophia Harris picked up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week honors after winning both of her matches against Rhode Island.

Swarthmore, ranked No. 22 in ITA D-3 rankings, won the Centennial Conference champions in 2025 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Swarthmore returns five of their six singles players from last year's lineup, including Erin Li was the Centennial Rookie of the Year last season, earning First Team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles.

LAST WEEK
Towson opened the 2026 spring season with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Johns Hopkins Sunday night, Feb. 8, at the Coppermine Bare Hills in a match that lasted nearly three and a half hours. Hopkins, who are ranked No. 7 in the Division III polls, earned the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. At No. 3, Towson's team of Gaia Montecchi and Ashira Murray won its match, 6-1. At No. 2, sophomores Tamzin PountneyT and Aubrey Carper led 4-2, but were unable to close the set. The teams split the six singles matches. Montecchi won in straight sets at No. 2, while Murray battled back to win in a super breaker at No. 5. Chandrè Boshoff also had a straight set victory on court 3. Towson played without Sania Suchinsky, who was out with an illness. The senior finished the 2025 season on a six-match winning streak.

FALL '25 RECAP
During the fall semester, the Tigers played in four events and defeated Rider in a head-to-head match. In addition, sophomores Gaia Montecchi and Kiersten Tambe and junior Chandrè Boshoff qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship in October.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Half of the roster was born outside of the United StatesBoshoff hails from George, South Africa, which is 8,100 miles from campus. Montecchi is a native of Bango a Ripoli, Italy which is 4,300 miles from Towson. Murray and Pountney  were born and raised in England, 3,500 miles from campus. Chloe Courtnage is from Calgary, Canada, which is 2,300 miles away. 

DID YOU KNOW?
Towson head coach Jamie Peterson was two-time team captain on the Towson men's tennis team from 1991-95 and finished his career with a 64-35 record, the fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in program history. He led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1993 and 1994.
