PHILADELPHIA - Gaia Montecchi moves to 10-2 on the season in singles action with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) on court two but the Towson University women's tennis team (6-6, 0-2 CAA) dropped its match against Drexel (5-4, 1-1 CAA) 5-2 on Friday in Philadelphia.
"With the exception of a few performances, we were not up to the task of competing against Drexel today which was extremely disappointing," head coach
Jamie Peterson said. "We have to be mentally stronger to win matches like this and we fell pretty far short."
The doubles point started well for the Tigers with Montecchi teaming up with
Ashira Murray to win on court three, 6-1, in a blistering 22 minutes. A little more than 10 minutes later, Drexel won on courts one and two to secure the doubles point.
Singles action commenced with the Dragons winning on courts five, four and one, in that order, to move ahead 4-0 and clinch the match win.
The remaining Tigers battled hard with Montecchi securing the first Towson point of the day with her win on court two, winning her tiebreaker 7-4.
Chloe Courtnage won on court six after a marathon tiebreaker in the first set which she won 17-15. Courtnage closed out the win with a 6-3 win in the second set in a match that took two hours and 19 minutes, just 17 minutes shorter than the two fastest singles matches on the day combined.
