TOWSON, Md.- Despite victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the Towson University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
Towson (6-8) had won 10 straight matches versus The Mount. The Tigers played without
Tamzin Pountney, who ranks third on the team in singles victories.
The Mountaineers (6-7) earned the doubles points – winning all three sets. Senior
Sania Suchinsky, who missed the first 12 matches of the spring semester with
mononucleosis, returned to the lineup – playing No. 3 doubles with Ashira Murray.
Gaia Montecchi evened the match with a 6-1
, 6-3 victory over Eirini Tsakiri on court 2
. The sophomore improved to 11-3 this season. Since last April, she has won 16-of-19 singles matches.
The Mount clinched the match with straight set victories on courts 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Kiersten Tambe earned a gusty three-set victory over Emma Perkins on court 1. After winning the opening set, the sophomore dropped to second set 6-0 but she dug deep to win the deciding set, 6-2.
"Today was a tough one to swallow," head coach
Jamie Peterson said. "We were inconsistent with everything across the board, which cost us the match. But credit to Mount St. Mary's, they wanted it more and it showed."
