Towson, Md. - The Towson University women's tennis team host two Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) opponents this weekend – welcoming Hampton on Friday and Stony Brook two days later. Six of the final seven matches this season for the Tigers (6-8, 0-3 CAA) are at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
Hampton (6-4, 0-1 CAA) had won six straight matches before dropping a 4-3 decision to NC A&T last weekend. Chelsea Chakanyuka is 8-1 at No. 4 singles and is 7-2 in doubles. Three other players have winning records, helping the Pirates have a combined of 26-5 on courts 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Stony Brook (4-11, 1-4 CAA) has lost seven straight but two of the losses were to ranked Ivy League schools and three others to three of the top teams in the CAA (UNCW, Campbell, William & Mary). Elena Lobo-Corral is 4-1 at No. 1 singles versus CAA opponents, while Laura Ozola and Paisha Douglas have each earned conference Player of the Week honors.
Hampton will host Stony Brook on Saturday.
SINGLING OUT
Gaia Montecchi and
Ashira Murray are a combined 21-7 in singles this season. Montecchi is 11-3 with victories on courts 1, 2 and 3. The sophomore has 10 straight set wins. Murray is 10-4 with five wins in both the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the lineup.
AWARD WINNERS
Murray was named Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Player of the Week on February 24 after improving to 7-0 with a pair of three set victories. Competing at No. 4 singles, the junior battled past Georgetown's Ashley Kennedy, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) to help the Tigers earn a 4-2 team win. She followed by edging Navy's Jina Cha, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (11-9) – capturing the final five points of the match.
A week earlier,
Chandrè Boshoff and
Kiersten Tambe were named the CAA Women's Doubles Team after posting a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles.
This is the first time that Towson has had multiple conference Players of the Week since 2016 when Lucy Wiliams and Barbora Vasilkova both earned Player of the Week honors.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
With a victory over Georgetown on February 20, head coach
Jamie Peterson moved into third place on the all-time wins list with 79 victories – passing Doug Neagle. Only Ken Volk (106 wins) and Peter Walten (86) have more coaching wins with the Towson University women's tennis program.
DID YOU KNOW?
Peterson was two-time team captain on the Towson men's tennis team from 1991-95 and finished his career with a 64-35 record, the fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in program history. He led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1993 and 1994.

Half of the roster was born outside of the United States
. Boshoff hails from George, South Africa, which is 8,100 miles from campus.
Montecchi is a native of Bango a Ripoli, Italy which is 4,300 miles from Towson. Murray and

Chloe Courtnage is from Calgary, Canada, which is 2,300 miles away.
FALL '25 RECAP
During the fall semester, the Tigers played in four events and defeated Rider in a head-to-head match. In addition, Montecchi, Tambe and Boshoff qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship in October.
