Towson Tennis Hosts Coppin, Del State This Weekend

Towson, Md. - The Towson University women's tennis team will host two matches this weekend – welcoming Coppin State on Friday and Delaware State on Saturday. Nine of the final 12 matches of the season for the Tigers (4-5) are at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
 
Coppin is 0-4 this season with losses to George Washington, Lafayette, George Mason and UDC. Delaware State (1-3) has split 4-3 decisions with George Mason and dropped 5-2 matches to Seton Hall and Drexel.
 
STRONG STARTS
Ashira Murray and Gaia Montecchi are both off to strong starts in singles this season. Murray is 8-1 with four wins in both the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the lineup, while Montecchi is 7-2 with victories on courts 1, 2 and 3.

AWARD WINNERS
Ashira Murray was named Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Player of the Week on February 24 after improving to 7-0 with a pair of three set victories. Competing at No. 4 singles, the junior battled past Georgetown's Ashley Kennedy, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) to help the Tigers earn a 4-2 team win. She followed by edging Navy's Jina Cha, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (11-9) – capturing the final five points of the match.
A week earlier, Chandrè Boshoff and Kiersten Tambe were named the CAA Women's Doubles Team after posting a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles.
This is the first time that Towson has had multiple conference Players of the Week since 2016 when Lucy Wiliams and Barbora Vasilkova both earned Player of Week honors.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS
With a victory over Georgetown on February 20, head coach Jamie Peterson moved into third place on the all-time wins list with 79 victories – passing Doug Neagle. Only Ken Volk (106 wins) and Peter Walten (86) have more coaching wins with the Towson University women's tennis program.

FALL '25 RECAP
During the fall semester, the Tigers played in four events and defeated Rider in a head-to-head match. In addition, sophomores Gaia Montecchi and Kiersten Tambeand junior Chandrè Boshoff qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship in October.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Half of the roster was born outside of the United States. Chandrè Boshoff hails from George, South Africa, which is 8,100 miles from campus. Gaia Montecchi is a native of Bango a Ripoli, Italy which is 4,300 miles from Towson. Ashira Murray and Tamzin Pountney were born and raised in England, 3,500 miles from campus. Chloe Courtnage is from Calgary, Canada, which is 2,300 miles away. 

DID YOU KNOW?
Towson head coach Jamie Peterson was two-time team captain on the Towson men's tennis team from 1991-95 and finished his career with a 64-35 record, the fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in program history. He led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1993 and 1994.
