TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's golf team starts its 2020 spring semester by competing in the prestigious Kiawah Island Classic.
 
The 53-school event is hosted by the College of Charleston from Sunday, March 1 through Tuesday, March 3 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C. This year's field has expanded by five more teams playing at the Osprey Point and Oak Point courses, in addition to a separate individual tournament to be played solely at the Cougar Point course.
 
Competing for the Tigers this weekend will be Jordan Cornelius, Jayla Kang, Julia Calomiris, Erica Han and Sarah Perine. Emma Cox will compete as an individual.
 
Cornelius competed in five events and finished with a team best 75.1 average over 14 rounds. She was Towson's top finisher in four out of the five events during the fall. Calomiris finished with a 76.9 average over 14 rounds. Han had three top 20 finishes during the fall. Perine was named CAA Golfer of the Week and had an eagle during a memorable fall campaign.
 
Kang shot a fall low round of 71 (-1) in the second round of the Towson Invitational. She averaged 76.9 during the fall.
 
"Our plan is to continue to set high goals and work towards them together," Towson head women's golf Shannon Briggs said.  "Everyone has the same end goal in mind and that is to win the CAA's. We recapped the numbers together in our semester end meeting, it was eye opening for them to see how far they came in such a short time together believing in themselves and their abilities. 
 
"The key to build continued success will be fine tune our strengths and work on the areas we want to improve.  No two days as a student athlete are a-like and I will ensure I create a positive space for them team to grow and be challenged."

TOURNAMENT NOTES
Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2020 edition of the Kiawah Island Spring Classic has expanded from 48 teams to 53 in this year's field and will be played for the sixth time in its history at Osprey Point at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C. Two courses are used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament including Oak Point. After 36 holes of play, the Top 26 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round, while teams 27-53 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point. Sixteen individuals will compete in a separate individual tournament at Cougar Point. Last year, Coastal Carolina and North Florida were both crowned tournament champions with a three-round score of 865 (+1). Sydney Shrader of UNF was the individual medalist shooting 9-under par with rounds of 72, 68 and 67.
