ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Towson University tennis team completed the first day of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday evening.
The doubles pair of Jessica Assenmacher and Themis Haliou will continue onto the round of 16 tomorrow, after being credited with a win on day one.
SINGLES
Haliou defeated Amber Policare of Maryland, 6-3, 6-4. The senior then fell to the No. 1 seeded player in the bracket, Penn State's Yvonna Zuffova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Amelia Lawson fell to Sifa Butcher of Howard, 6-0, 6-1. She will play Delaware's Isabella Montana tomorrow in consolation.
Sarah Pospischill battled in a three-set thriller against Lauren Splett of George Mason, but ultimately couldn't secure the win, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Tomorrow, Pospischill will meet Stefania Moysiadi of Morgan State on the other side of the bracket.
Sissi Axelsson dropped her match to No. 11-seeded Jillian Taggart of Navy (6-3, 6-0). In the consolation round, she will play against Saint Joseph's Sophia Amato.
Olivia Rothfeld was edged by Samantha Svendsen of Delaware, 7-5, 6-1. She will face Oluwayemisi Ifederu of Howard in the back draw tomorrow.
Assenmacher couldn't get the victory over the No. 13 seed, Navy's Kacey Moore (7-5, 6-3). The senior will play consolation singles in the second day of the tournament but her opponent has not been determined yet.
DOUBLES
Lawson and Pospischill dropped their first doubles match to the No. 1 seeded duo of O'Gorman and Chekhlystova of Penn State, 6-1.
Axelsson and Rothfeld also fell to George Mason's Wirt and Hashiguchi, 6-1.
The duo of Assenmacher and Haliou advanced due to an injury from Coppin State's Georgieva and Turner. They will face the No. 2 seed Nielsen and Friedland of Penn State tomorrow at 9:45 a.m.
