ST. HELENA ISLAND S.C. – Brad Riley carded his third consecutive even par round of 72 on Tuesday and finished tied for 11
th place overall at the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Golf Championship held on the Cotton Dike Course at Dataw Island Golf Course.
The sophomore made five birdies in his first 12 holes and was 2-under par for the tournament with three holes to play, but had a double bogey on No. 7. The Towson team began Tuesday's round on the 10
th hole. Riley led the team with 30 pars and ranked in the top 10 overall in Par 5 scoring, Par 4 scoring and birdies.
"The was a great conference debut for him. It takes a ton of consistency to shoot 72-72-72," Towson head coach
Mike Larkin said. "This tournament was more like the
Brad Riley I expected to see this season. He would tell you that he didn't play to his potential the rest of the spring."
After a slow start,
Justin Griffith made back-to-back-to-back birdies to finish the back nine. The junior finished with a final round 78. Overall, he was +10 after 54 holes. After three rounds, Griffith played the Par 3 holes at even par and made nine birdies.
Senior
Jackson Courtney, playing in his final tournament as a Tiger, made four birdies in a 4-over par round of 76. Overall, he had played the first 13 holes at 3-over, but was +10 on the final five holes. Courtney played the Par 3 holes at 1-under par and made nine total birdies.
Courtney and
Derek Gold were incoming freshman when Larkin took over as head coach in the summer of 2017. Gold traveled with the team, but did not compete.
"I walked the final few holes with Jackson," added Larkin said. "There were a few tears shed. It was an emotional moment with Derek right there at No. 9. Jackson almost got his first collegiate eagle on the 8
th hole, a 356-yard par 4. He drove it 39 yards short of the green. We read it like a putt. He just lipped out and tapped in for birdie."
Julian Gonzalez made two birdies with 11 pars on Tuesday and shot 5-over 77. Both he and
Jeremy Summerson were 24-over par during the tournament.
Towson finished in seventh place at +42, but was 83 shots clear of eighth place Hofstra.
The College of Charleston won the tournament by 23 strokes with a record 30-under par score and earned the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The Cougars had three of the top four finishers, including individual champion Zach Reuland, who shot rounds of 68-68-67 in the victory.
"The South Carolina amateur was played on this course in 2018 and Logan Sowell, who finished runner-up in this tournament finished 10th, so they had a home course advantage but to shoot those numbers is impressive," added Larkin. "The conference tournament will be back here again next year and four of the guys who played this year have a chance to be back. That will be helpful. Events like this, when the pressure is amped up and the adrenaline is a little higher, helps you see what you need to work on to improve."
