PIKESVILLE, Md. — The Towson University women's tennis team will return to the Coppermine Racquet and Fitness Club in Pikesville, Maryland to face Fairleigh Dickinson University on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. This will be the Tigers' second of three total matches at Coppermine.
Last Time Out
The Tigers earned their first win of the spring last Saturday, shutting out Johns Hopkins, 7-0 on Feb. 19.
Towson earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches with the teams of Themis Haliou and Sissi Axelsson (No. 1), Amelia Lawson and Lea Kosanovic (No. 2) and Jessica Assenmacher and Antonia Lawson (No. 3) setting the tone for the match.
Haliou (No. 2), Assenmacher (No. 3) and Elessa Jacobs (No. 6) clinched the match for the Tigers with straight set victories- dropping just three of 39 games.
Amelia Lawson (No. 1), Sarah Pospischill (No. 4) and Olivia Rothfeld (No. 5) also earned straight set wins.
Fall 2021 Recap
Towson had a solid fall season, competing in four tournaments. Themis Haliou led the way to start off the fall, winning the B Flight at Maryland's Bedford Cup. Sarah Pospischill also placed second in her flight at the tournament. Haliou and Jessica Assenmacher then followed up with a strong doubles performance at ITA's, advancing to the round of 16. At Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational, Pospischill and Lea Kosanovic each advanced to the finals in their respective consolation flight.
The Tigers ended the season with the Fall Tiger Classic, where the team amassed 15 singles wins. Olivia Rothfeld went 3-0 over the weekend to lead the team.
Last Spring
The black & gold finished the spring 2021 season with a 7-14 overall record. Haliou got three wins at the No. 1 spot and five at the No. 3. Amelia Lawson also picked up eight wins on courts three and four. Pospischill won 11 matches between playing on courts four, five and six while Assenmacher also secured seven wins on the last two courts.
New Faces
In addition to the nine returners, head coach Jamie Peterson welcomed three new student-athletes to the team in the fall. Freshmen Sissi Axelsson and Nadeen Shrebati both joined the squad from Sweden and Australia, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Rothfeld also transferred in from Georgia Southern. Katie Twelves also joined the team for the spring season from the University of Leeds in England.
Scouting the Knights
Fairleigh Dickinson currently sits with a 1-3 record, falling to Fordham (3-4), NJIT (1-6) and St. John's (0-4). The team's only win of the season so far came against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe Hofstra, 6-1.
Next Up
The Black & Gold will host one final match at Coppermine this season, as they welcome Navy on March 5 at 6 p.m.
