SOUTH KENT, CT. – The Towson University men's golf team had an impressive second place finish at the Hartford Hawk Invitational. The Tigers finished 7-under for the tournament, the fifth best score to par for a 54-hole tournament in program history. Tuesday morning began with the completion of the second round where the Tigers shot a collective 10-under par.
Julian Gonzalez made seven birdies en route to a career-low 66.
"This was a nice continuation of our play from the first two events of the fall," head coach
Mike Larkin stated. "I think the guys are probably a bit disappointed with the score today, but the strength of our day yesterday carried us to the second-place finish regardless."
Four of the Tigers placed in the top-25.
Gonzalez (72-66-73) led the way for the Tigers, finishing tied for eighth in a field of 95 players. The graduate student shot 1-over for his final round to finish with a score of 211 (-5).
Jeremy Summerson and
Brad Riley tied for 16
th after shooting even par after 54 holes. Riley's best round was his first where he shot 2-under while Summerson performed the best on round two at 1-under.
Finishing one stroke behind them was
Justin Griffith who shot 1-over par and finished in a tied for 24
th place. He shot 1-under par 71 during the first two rounds.
Rounding out the team was
Poonyapat Nantsupawat and
Ryan Peters who finished tied for 57
th. Nantsupawat shot a two-under 70 in Round 2. Peters, competing as an individual, 74-74-75 in his first event as a Tiger.
"We are in a really good spot," Larkin added. "Now it's just a matter of doing the things we do well a little more consistently."
UCF won the event with a final score of 829 (-35). The Knights dominated the field, with two of their athletes finishing top-three. Luis Carrera from UCF won the tournament individually with a 200 (-16). Carrera shot at least 3-under for every round.
Larkin's team will compete in the Howard/ San Francisco Intercollegiate held at TPC Potomac at Avenal Farm next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 26-27).
