GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Towson University women's golf team wrapped up day one of play at the UNCG Collegiate in seventh place after scoring a 303 for the first 18 holes. The Tigers began the next 18 but were not able to finish as play was suspended due to darkness. Round two and three of the tournament will resume tomorrow morning.
"We have a talented group of young ladies and today everyone had an opportunity to play really well," head coach
Shannon Briggs stated. "We had a great practice round yesterday and everyone had an understanding of how demanding this golf course can be."
High Point University currently leads the 20-team field, sitting at even par. The Panthers' Anna Howerton claimed the top spot individually after shooting 66 (-6).
Faith McIlvain is currently tied for sixth after shooting 74 (+2) for the first 18 holes, notching birdies on the first and last hole. During the second 18 she added three more birdies and parred 9 holes.
Peyton Costabile carded a 74 (+2) for her first round of 18, recording three birdies. The sophomore finished play tied for 13
th.
Madison Barber scored a 75 (+1) for her first round after birdieing four holes, two of which were back-to-back. Barber added two more birdies during the next round.
"Madison again struck her irons solid and putted very well today pairing that with capitalizing on a few early errors in tough windy conditions," Briggs commented on Barber's performance.
Isabella Portokalis shot 80 for the first round, recording a birdie for hole No. 7. She notched another one during the second 18 and parred eight holes.
Grace Oristian shot 90 for her first 18, parring eight holes. She saw improvement for the next round, making par for six consecutive holes before play was suspended.
"Very proud of the continued momentum the team is taking from Navy," Briggs concluded. "Tomorrow will be fun as we look to keep the same game plan with a stronger start to cap off UNCG."
