EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. -The Towson University women's golf team wrapped up the first day of play at the Edisto Island Invitational hosted by College of Charleston. After two rounds and 36 holes the Black & Gold sit in 15
th place, only five strokes behind Wofford College.
The Tigers had a slow start to the tournament, finishing the first round with a score of 320. Towson saw major improvement during the second round, dropping 26 strokes to finish with a 294.
With three players in the top 10, host team College of Charleston leads the field with a day one final score of 564 after rounds of 279 and 285. Reigning Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Golfer of the Year and 2022 CAA Championship medalist Emma Schimpf was the top individual finisher after rounds of 67 and 69. Schimpf, who plays for Charleston, currently sits at 4-under par.
Isabella Portokalis secured a top 20 finish, tying for 16
th at the conclusion of day one. Portokalis began the tournament shooting 75 before following up with a collegiate career low 70 for the second round. The senior totaled six birdies throughout 36 holes, three during each round.
Grace Oristian parred 20 holes during the first two rounds, shooting 80 and 77.
Faith McIlvain shot 79 and 83 for her first day of the tournament. The senior notched two birdies total, one per round.
Madison Barber dropped 13 strokes in between rounds to shoot 74 for her final 18 of the day. She had two birdies and was on par for 12 holes during round two.
Peyton Costabile shaved off 13 strokes between rounds as well, finishing the day with a 73. The sophomore notched three birdies, two of which were back-to-back.
