ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After one round and 18 holes of play the Towson University women's golf team sits in second place, trailing behind top finisher Navy by three strokes. The team finished ahead of Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) foes Hofstra, William & Mary and Monmouth.
The Tigers shot a 305 for the first of two rounds, which ties their lowest 18-hole score of the season so far. Towson ranks third for number of birdies earned, accumulating 10 for the day. The team also has the third most amount of pars earned at 48.
Madison Barber leads the 88-player field, finishing day one efforts in first place after shooting an even par, 72 which ties her career low. This is the third time the graduate student has ever shot that score. Barber earned half of Towson's 10 birdies, three of which were consecutive on holes 12, 13 and 14.
Right behind her was teammate
Faith McIlvain who wrapped up play tied for second, shooting 74. McIlvain was on par across 12 holes and added two birdies to her scorecard during the front nine.
Grace Oristian completed round one shooting 79. The freshman was one over par for the back nine, earning a birdie on hole 12.
Isabella Portokalis (80) and
Peyton Costabile (86) rounded out the squad. Costabile earned two birdies while Portokalis was on par for 11 holes.
Rayab Lee, competing as an individual, shot an 86 to wrap up play.
The second and final round of the tournament begins tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
