LYNCHBURG, Va. –
Themis Haliou earned a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles, but the Towson University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to undefeated Liberty Saturday afternoon at the new Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
Haliou, a junior from Cyprus, defeated Alexandra Almborg 6-3, 6-4. In the first set, Haliou held in all five of her service games and broke Almborg one time. In the second set, with the score tied at 3, Haliou broke again then held serve for the victory, winning the final game at love.
"That is a good a win at number one as we have in a long time," said fourth year head coach
Jamie Peterson. "Themis is coming together. She is staying emotionally calm on the court and is executing. She is a talented player. I knew when I recruited her that she had a high ceiling. Now things are coming together for her. She is playing with confidence and it is fun to watch."
At No. 6 singles, senior
Lauryn Jacobs won the first set 7-6, but eventually lost the match is a super tiebreaker.

Postgame Quote:
Towson head coach
Jamie Peterson: "I think the final score was a little deceiving. Some of the straight set losses were a lot closer than the scores indicated. Amelia, Sarah and Alexa all played matches that lasted an hour and a half. That was indicative that we made them play long points. Many of those games went to deuce but we could not capitalize in the opportunities. Liberty has placed six matches and they are a little more match tough than us. When we get three of four matches into the season, then I am going to expect those opportunities to start turning around. I felt like today was a step in the right direction. We moved forward from yesterday to today."
Next Match:
Towson will host Delaware State next Saturday at Coppermine Racquet & Fitness in Pikesville. The match will begin at 6 p.m. Towson is 2-0 lifetime against the Hornets, including a 7-0 victory a year ago.
