Towson Tennis Earns Split In Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson women's tennis team earned a split Sunday at The McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, losing to William & Mary then defeating Norfolk State.

In the first match, Towson dropped a 7-0 decision to the host school. Alexa Martinez, playing in her 50th career singles match, won the first set at No. 3 singles, but lost the match in a super tiebreaker. William & Mary has won 26 of the last 34 conference championships, including 15 straight from 1986-2000.

Immediately following that match, Towson took on Norfolk State, who had dropped a 6-1 decision to William & Mary Sunday morning.

Towson earned the doubles points as the teams of Themis Haliou and Martinez (No. 1), Amelia Lawson and Lauryn Jacobs (No. 2) and Jessica Assenmacher and Lea Kosanovic (No. 3) all won in convincing fashion.

The Tigers then went up 3-0 after Lawson (No. 2 singles) and Martinez (No. 3 singles) made short work of their opponents, dropping a combined four games.

The Spartans made it 3-2 with victories at No. 4 and No. 5, but Sarah Pospischill clinched the victory with a gutty 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6. It is her fourth singles win in the last five matches.

Haliou was leading 7-5, 4-5 at No. 1 singles but the match was stopped when Pospischill closed out the match.

Postgame Quote:
Towson head coach Jamie Peterson: "In the second match we came out in the doubles, which was a great start to the match. The front part of the singles lineup took change but the back half did not. Sarah was injured in the William & Mary match. I was reluctant to play her in the Norfolk match and she really struggled in the first set but came roaring back to win convincingly in the second and third sets. Alexa took a step in the right direction today. She won against a high quality opponent against William & Mary. She has been moving in that direction with set points in both matches last weekend. Today she won a set and then won a match. That is good news for us."

Next Match:
Towson remains on the road next week with a pair of matches versus Colonial Athletic Association teams. On Friday, the team will be in North Carolina to take on Elon then visit South Carolina for a match versus the College of Charleston next Sunday.
