TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University tennis team defeated Mary Washington, 7-0, on Monday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex for its third consecutive victory.
It was the first of six matches this week for Towson. The team is scheduled to play at St. Joseph's (Tuesday), host Drexel (Thursday) and George Washington (Friday) then visit Delaware (Saturday) and Loyola (Sunday).
The Tigers swept all the doubles matches to win the first point of the match. The No. 1 team of
Alexa Martinez and
Themis Haliou won for the seventh time in the last nine matches.
The Tigers won all six singles matches, three in straight sets while three went the distance.
Sarah Pospischill put Towson up with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4. The sophomore leads the team with eight singles wins this season.
Minutes later, Haliou moved to 3-0 at No. 2 with an equally impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Lauryn Jacobs clinched the victory with a three set win at No. 6, taking the third set, 6-2.
Martinez improved to 3-0 at No. 1 singles, with a gritty 7-6, 6-3 victory.
With the match already decided, the other two matches went to a super tiebreaker after the matches at No. 3 and No. 5 went to a third set.
Jessica Assenmacher made the score 6-0 with a 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker then
Amelia Lawson finished off the shutout by winning 10-6. It is the fifth consecutive win for the junior in the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
"All the way down the lineup, today might have been our best performance," said Towson head coach
Jamie Peterson: "Yes, we dropped some sets, but we won all the matches. Maybe some of the girls did not play their best, but they found ways to win and that is what we need to learn. We have put three straight wins together. It is a good feeling to put together a succession of matches of playing good tennis, which builds confidence."
Mary Washington's only previous loss was a 4-3 decision to George Mason. The Patriots beat Towson by the same margin.
