Towson Tennis Tops St. Joseph’s for Fourth Consecutive Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Towson University tennis team improved to 4-0 during the month of April with a 5-2 victory over St. Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon at the SJU Tennis Complex. The Tigers have defeated Loyola, Mount St. Mary's, Mary Washington and St. Joseph's in succession.

Jamie Peterson's 2018-19 team won five straight times during a 10-2 finish to the regular season.

This was the second of six matches this week for Towson. The Tigers shutout Mary Washington on Monday at home and will host Drexel (Thursday) and George Washington (Friday) before visiting Delaware (Saturday) and Loyola (Sunday) to close out the week.

The Tigers earned the doubles point when the No. 3 team of Jessica Assenmacher and Sarah Pospischill rallied to win 7-5 after the top two pairs split matches.

"We won the doubles point but it was a subpar performance and I was not happy," Peterson said. "We were two points away from losing the point. Sarah and Jess were down 5-4 and it was 30-all. Who knows what happens from there if we lose that doubles point? But what they did in singles is what they should have done in doubles."

In singles, Towson earned four straight set victories with Themis Haliou (No. 2), Amelia Lawson (No. 3), Pospischill (No. 4) and Assenmacher (No.5) losing 10 combined games.

Haliou improved to 4-0 since Peterson flipped the junior and Alexa Martinez at the top of the lineup, winning 48-of-54 games during the win streak. She has not lost more than two games in any of the eight sets.

"I had a few different things in mind with that decision," added Peterson. "Alexa had picked up her game and I wanted to get Themis a little bit more confidence. It gives our lineup a different look and now I can pick and choose at the top two spots."

Lawson has now won six straight matches at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, while Pospischill leads the team in singles victories with nine.

"What can you say about Sarah?" Peterson stated. "The girl goes out and competes as hard as she possibly can every time. It is fun to watch because she is such so small in stature but the fight inside of her is big. She has a lot of heart and we love it."

Martinez and Lauryn Jacobs lost in super tiebreakers after splitting the first sets.

"They both had match points in those matches, so we were that close to a 7-0 win," Peterson said.
