TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University women's tennis team will welcome Johns Hopkins to the Coppermine Racquet and Fitness Club in Pikesville, Maryland on Saturday night, Feb. 19, for a 6 p.m. match.
Last Time Out
The Tigers fell in matches to Mary Washington (4-3), Richmond (4-1) and Maryland (4-0) to open their spring season.
After dropping the doubles point to the Eagles, the four-hour match came down to the last three singles matches which were all decided in a third set. Amelia Lawson, Jessica Assenmacher and Sissi Axelsson all picked up singles wins against Mary Washington. The duo of Themis Haliou and Axelsson also picked up a victory on the first doubles court.
Fall 2021 Recap
Towson had a solid fall season, competing in four tournaments. Themis Haliou led the way to start off the fall, winning the B Flight at Maryland's Bedford Cup. Sarah Pospischill also placed second in her flight at the tournament. Haliou and Jessica Assenmacher then followed up with a strong doubles performance at ITA's, advancing to the round of 16. At Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational, Pospischill and Lea Kosanovic each advanced to the finals in their respective consolation flight.
The Tigers ended the season with the Fall Tiger Classic, where the team amassed 15 singles wins. Olivia Rothfeld went 3-0 over the weekend to lead the team.
Last Spring
The black & gold finished the spring 2021 season with a 7-14 overall record. Haliou got three wins at the No. 1 spot and five at the No. 3. Amelia Lawson also picked up eight wins on courts three and four. Pospischill won 11 matches between playing on courts four, five and six while Assenmacher also secured seven wins on the last two courts.
New Faces
In addition to the nine returners, head coach Jamie Peterson welcomed three new student-athletes to the team in the fall. Freshmen Sissi Axelsson and Nadeen Shrebati both joined the squad from Sweden and Australia, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Rothfeld also transferred in from Georgia Southern. Katie Twelves also joined the team for the spring season from the University of Leeds in England.
Scouting the Blue Jays
Johns Hopkins has yet to play a match this spring as it is set to open their slate against Towson on Saturday.
The team had a solid showing in the fall, competing in five tournaments. Johns Hopkins participated in the Tiger Fall Classic from Oct. 15-17, where they faced Towson, Coppin State, Saint Joseph's and Georgetown. The Tigers came away with five singles wins against the Blue Jays.
Next Up
The Black & Gold will return to the Coppermine Racquet and Fitness Club to host Navy on Saturday, Feb. 26 for another 6 p.m. match.
The team will host one more match at Coppermine, as they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson on March 5at 6 p.m.
