FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Towson University women's tennis team is set to open its 2022 spring season with three matches in three days. The Tigers will travel to take on Mary Washington on Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. followed by Richmond on Feb. 11 at noon and Maryland Feb. 12 at 5 p.m.
Fall 2021 Recap
Towson had a solid fall season, competing in four tournaments. Themis Haliou led the way to start off the fall, winning the B Flight at Maryland's Bedford Cup. Sarah Pospischill also placed second in her flight at the tournament. Haliou and Jessica Assenmacher then followed up with a strong doubles performance at ITA's, advancing to the round of 16. At Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational, Pospischill and Lea Kosanovic each advanced to the finals in their respective consolation flight.
The Tigers ended the season with the Fall Tiger Classic, where the team amassed 15 singles wins. Olivia Rothfeld went 3-0 over the weekend to lead the team.
Last Spring
The black & gold finished the spring 2021 season with a 7-14 overall record. Haliou got three wins at the No. 1 spot and five at the No. 3. Amelia Lawson also picked up eight wins on courts three and four. Pospischill won 11 matches between playing on courts four, five and six while Assenmacher also secured seven wins on the last two courts.
New Faces
In addition to the nine returners, head coach Jamie Peterson welcomed three new student-athletes to the team in the fall. Freshmen Sissi Axelsson and Nadeen Shrebati both joined the squad from Sweden and Australia, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Rothfeld also transferred in from Georgia Southern. Katie Twelves also joined the team for the spring season from the University of Leeds in England.
Looking Into The Eagles
Mary Washington is coming off a very successful 2021 spring campaign, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. They were also crowned the Coast to Coast 2021 Champions, defeating Christopher Newport 5-0 in the final. They ended the year with a 14-3 overall mark.
On Dec. 9,Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn made their debut in the Atlantic South Regional ranking, coming in at No. 9 in doubles. The duo went 6-2 in the fall.
The Eagles scrimmaged George Mason on Feb. 5 but fell in a close 4-3 decision.
Scouting The Spiders
Richmond also had a productive spring 2021 season, advancing to the A-10 Championship for the second consecutive season. The team was swept by VCU, 4-0. They finished the slate with a 9-5 record including a 5-3 mark at home.
The Spiders competed in three tournaments in the fall. The team struggled in singles, only picking up one win on the second court. They also collected three doubles wins on courts two and three.
Towson's match against Richmond will be played at Mary Washington's facility.
Investigating The Terps
Maryland struggled in fall 2021, ending with a 3-16 overall dual record. The Terrapins earned only one regular season win over Indiana (4-3) but made a run in the Big Ten Tournament, defeating Rutgers (4-2) and Nebraska (4-3) but falling to Iowa in the quarterfinals, 4-0.
This spring, Maryland is already 4-1, winning its two most recent matches over George Washington (7-0) and George Mason (5-0). The Terps will face St. John's before meeting the Tigers.

The Tigers will host Johns Hopkins at the Coppermine Racquet and Fitness Club on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.
