Bobby Washington was a key figure in the Tigers’ rise to a number one national ranking during their NCAA Division II glory days in the late seventies. A four-year starter at power forward, Bobby led the Tigers to a combined two-year 53-7 mark that included back-to-back undefeated records (20-0) in Mason-Dixon Conference play.

In his junior year (1976-77) Towson posted a 27-3 mark and were ranked number one in the NCAA Division II national poll for most of the season. That record included a school record 23-game winning streak. After capturing the Mason-Dixon title and the South-Atlantic Regional championship, Towson advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals where they were beaten 85-82 by Sacred Heart.

The following year, with Bobby as team captain, Towson repeated its Mason-Dixon title. The Tigers’ season ended with a loss in the NCAA Regional championship game. Towson closed out the regular season as the number three ranked team in Division II, compiling a 26-4 record.

Early on at Towson he averaged 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds as he helped the Tigers to a 14-11 record in his freshman season. In his sophomore year, he averaged 15.1 points and 9.4 rebounds as the Tigers posted a 19-10 record and finished as Mason-Dixon runner-up.

A two-time first team All-Conference selection, Bobby remains among the top 10 scorers all-time at Towson with 1,437 points. He is one of only three players in the first 100 years of Tiger men’s basketball to have grabbed over 900 career rebounds (970). His 126 blocked shots rank him 7th on the all-time list.

After graduating from Towson Bobby worked as a sales representative for several different corporations. A native of Suitland, Md. who attended Northwestern High School, he lived in Georgia for nearly 20 years. He was named as the Ethicon Inc.’s top regional sales director four years in a row. Later he was the top senior biopharmaceutical sales rep at Amgen.

Bobby passed away at his Peachtree City, Ga. home in 2022. Survived by his wife, Anna, sons Robert, Jr. and Jacob, and daughter Mia, he was 65-years-old.
