Luther Cox played baseball, basketball, soccer and track and field at Towson (Maryland State Teachers College at Towson).

After his collegiate career, Cox served as a flight navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber in World War II. He served in England, Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar, Tobruk, Oran, Tunis, Libya, Alexandria and the Suez before being shot down over North Africa on June 19, 1943 on his 22nd mission.

While bailing out, he was badly wounded and captured by the Germans. He spent two-and-a-half years in an internment camp, sending postcards to his former head coach Donald "Doc" Minnegan. Cox cited Minnegan's mantra of "never give up" as a major part of his survival at the camp. He was found in May 1945 alive and well.
