Throughout her career Shanae Baker-Brice excelled on the basketball court, eventually leaving Towson University as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
Shanae joined the AAU club, Maryland Sparks and Ballhandler, at age seven. Over the next decade she would develop the skills that would help her become a formidable player. The club won a number of AAU titles. In addition, she led Alice Deal Junior High to consecutive Washington, D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association titles, earning MVP honors.
Upon entering Theodore Roosevelt High School she became an immediate varsity starter, joining a group known as the Fabulous Freshmen. In 2002 she helped the Lady Rough Riders to an unbeaten season that included a DCIAA championship. In an amazing senior year she averaged 24 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals per game, as the Rough Riders claimed another city title. Shanae was an All-Metro selection three consecutive years, second team twice and first team once. In recognition of her play and contribution to the program’s success, her high school jersey No. 3 was retired at the end of her senior season.
Shanae maintained her torrid pace at Towson. She started 116 of the 121 games she played, becoming the all-time scoring leader in Tiger women’s basketball history with 1,806 points, averaging 14.9 ppg. At the time of her induction, she held career program records for field goals made (635), field goals attempted (1,636), free throws made (443) and free throws attempted (630) and ranked second in steals (292) and third in assists (465). She was a two-time first team All-CAA selection and a third team pick once. In her freshman year she was named to the CAA’s All-Rookie team while being selected Rookie of the Week four times. In her junior year she was also selected to the league’s All-Defensive Team. She led the Tigers to their first-ever 20-win season when Towson posted a 22-10 mark in 2007-08.
In 2009 the Tigers picked up a signature win with a 67-55 victory over 25th-ranked Maryland led by Shanae’s game high 25 points. It was Towson’s only win over a nationally ranked opponent in women’s basketball.
After graduating with a degree in women’s studies, Shanae took her basketball skills abroad, playing one year for Edremit Belediye in Turkey and two years for Njarovik in Iceland. In 2012 she led Njarovik to its first national championship and Icelandic Cup posting her first and only basketball career triple-double of 36 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists in the title game to earn Powerade Cup MVP honors.
Upon returning to the United States Shanae served as a volunteer assistant coach at Howard University before joining the Tigers’ staff as director of operations. In 2014, Shanae traded her basketball shoes for football cleats, joining Lady Elite of the Women’s Flag Football League as a wide receiver and safety. Over 11 years with the Lady Elite she has become an integral part of the program’s success contributing to an impressive string of victories that included five National Championships and numerous regional titles. Shanae was named the Defensive MVP of the 2024 championship.
