The head men’s tennis coach at Towson for nearly 30 years, Dr. John McCleary was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1983.

During his tenure as the Tigers’ head coach, he guided the Tiger tennis teams to over 200 wins, leading the team to its best mark in 1973: 15-3.

A Baltimore native who earned his undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins, Dr. McCleary was a swimmer and ran track at JHU. A full-time history professor at Towson for almost 30 years, he earned his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin where he first began his association with the sport of tennis.
