A three-year starter in the Tiger infield, John Andrade '86 was inducted into the Tiger Hall of Fame in 1997.

The Centralia, Pa., native batted .328 in his college career. The Tigers’ leading hitter in 1983, he batted .360 with seven home runs and 25 runs batted in while leading Towson to a second-place finish in its first East Coast Conference regular season. At the conclusion of the season, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers and played two years of minor league baseball in the Rangers’ organization.

The first Towson player to be drafted by a major league organization, Andrade’s career batting average ranked high on the Tigers’ all-time list. In his sophomore season, he batted .341 and set Towson single-season records with 40 base hits and 44 runs scored. As a freshman, Andrade hit eight triples, setting a school record that stood until 2009. He finished sixth in NCAA Division I in triples that season.

For his career, John had 101 runs scored with 11 homers and 55 RBI. He was the Tigers’ career leader in triples (13) until 2006, and at the time of his graduation he ranked among Towson’s all-time leaders in base hits, runs scored and stolen bases. He still holds a share of Towson’s single-game record with three home runs.

Andrade served as an assistant coach at Towson in 1985 and was also an assistant coach at the Naval Academy from 1989 to 1992. He worked as a counselor for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and married another Towson Hall of Fame inductee, the former Betty Lou Bischof (women’s basketball).
