Recognized as Towson’s Senior Athlete of the Year in 1957, Don Hughes helped the Tigers to winning records in both soccer and wrestling over the course of his career. He also played a year of tennis.

In 1956 the Tigers’ soccer team posted a 9-0-2 record, the last undefeated record in the program’s history. Wrestling at 123 pounds Don was instrumental in Towson’s undefeated dual meet record in 1956. He won the Mason-Dixon tournament title in 1955 and was runner up in 1956.

Upon graduation Don began a career in education. Before moving into administration, he was named Maryland’s first Teacher of the Year in the award’s inaugural year, 1971. Following positions at Fullerton Elementary and Red House Run School as an assistant principal, he served as principal at Berkshire Elementary School.

In 1978 Don, who also coached soccer in the Cromwell Valley Park recreation program, was the Baltimore County youth commissioner. The following year he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, representing the Ninth District until 1986.

Don passed away in June, 2022. He was 88-years-old.
