A native of Sandy Lake, Pa., Joe McMullen was the athletics director from 1979 to his untimely death in September 1983. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983.

As Towson’s athletic director during the Tigers’ first four years of Division I affiliation, he provided outstanding leadership during a very critical period in Towson’s athletic history. He was also instrumental in Towson gaining membership in the East Coast Conference in 1982.

Prior to coming to Towson, he was athletic director at Marshall University for eight years and had served as head football coach at San Jose State for two seasons. A 1946 graduate of Brown University, he was also a member of the Penn State football staff for six years.
