Hall of Fame
The winningest basketball coach in Towson history, Vince Angotti was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1995.
During his 16 seasons as head coach, the Johnstown, Pa. native led Towson to an overall record of 231-178. He was honored as the District II Coach of the Year in 1977-78 when he led the Tigers to a 26-4 record and the Mason-Dixon Championship.
In 1976-77 and 1977-78, Angotti directed the Tigers to two of the finest seasons ever. In 1976-77, he guided Towson to a 27-3 record and 23 straight wins. The Tigers finished the regular season as the number one-ranked team in Division II and beat Winston-Salem and Baltimore to win the South Athlantic regionals at the Towson Center. In the NCAA quarterfinals, Towson lost to Sacred Heart.
The following season, Angotti led the Tigers to their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, where they lost in the regional finals. Two years later, Towson was a Division I program and Angotti retired following the 1982-83 season.
As the Tigers’ head coach, Angotti coached three players who were drafted by NBA teams (Larry Witherspoon in 1974, Pat McKinley in 1977 and Roger Dickens in 1978). In addition, Brian Matthews, McKinley and Dickens were all named All-Americans.
