Honored as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Player of the Year as a junior, Dale Chipps '89 was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 2003.

Chipps is one of the top wide receivers to play for the Tigers. A three-year starter at wide receiver, he led the Tigers in pass receiving as a sophomore and a junior. During his sophomore year, he helped the Tigers post a 7-2-1 record and finish the season as the 10th-ranked team in NCAA Division II.

A native of Brandywine, Md., Chipps led the Tigers in pass receiving during the 1985 season, catching 54 passes for 1,001 yards. He was ranked ninth in Division II among pass receiving leaders that season. In 1986, he was named honorable mention All-American, first team All-ECAC and was picked as the ECAC Player of the Year. During his junior season he set a Towson single-season record with 63 pass receptions for 1,135 yards and six touchdowns.

As the Tigers’ top receiver, he helped Towson post an 8-3-1 record and earn an NCAA Division II playoff berth in its final season at the Division II level. As a senior Chipps caught 38 passes for 605 yards and two touchdowns in what turned out to be an injury-shortened season.

The 1987 season was Towson’s first at the Division I-AA level. On November 14, he suffered a broken femur when he collided with the goal post at Liberty University. The injury ended his college career and may have cost him a professional career in the NFL. He had already broken the Towson career record for pass receiving (157 receptions; 2,768 yards; 14 touchdowns). He also set a school record when he caught an 82-yard touchdown pass in the season-opener at Northeastern in 1989.

After finishing his college career, Chipps signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins. He was released after a year.

Chipps has two sons – Charlie and Jack – and worked in the mortgage industry.
