Hall of Fame
After earning accolades in soccer and baseball at Towson, George Henderson went on to a coaching career as an amateur, semipro and college baseball coach that spanned five-decades. A 1963 graduate of Towson, he was inducted into the Tigers’ Hall of Fame, which he helped start, in 1974.
After graduating from Towson George taught social studies at Catonsville Junior High School before co-founding, with the Baltimore Orioles star, Brooks Robinson Sporting Goods. A scout for the Orioles he worked with the Leone’s-Johnny’s Baseball semipro baseball team, winning All-American National Championships plus numerous Maryland state and Baltimore City titles.
From 1979-83 George was the head baseball coach at the Community College of Baltimore. Later he began a 23-year stint as the head baseball coach at Essex Community College where he guided the Knights to the NJCAA Division I National Championship in 1992 on the strength of a 34-game winning streak, picking up the National Coach of the Year as well. Combined, George’s CCB and ECC teams captured seven NJCAA Region XX titles. A seven-time Coach of the Year he was inducted into the Region XX, Maryland Association of Baseball Coaches and CCB halls of fame. It was estimated his combined career coaching record to be 641-346.
A past president of the Ed Block Courage Awards program, George was co-founder and officer for the Baltimore Boys of Summer that honored local baseball and softball stars in addition to supporting military charities including the Wounded Warriors. George passed away in March, 2024. He was 89 years old.
