Hall of Fame
One of the most outstanding scholar-athletes to graduate from Towson, Susan Hill Gebhardt '78 was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1994.
She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in elementary education and won the Tiger Club Academic Achievement award as the top Tiger scholar-athlete. She also won Towson’s Souris Award, given to the top junior student-athlete at Towson.
A member of the Tiger swimming and field hockey teams, she was a record-setting performer in the breastroke events. The Tiger captain as a senior, she set school records in the 50-breaststroke, 100-breaststroke, and the 200-breastroke in 1978. She set the mark in the 50 with a 33.40, which was one of the top times in Towson history. Her time of 1:12.30 in the 100 was a mark that stood until 1984. Her record in the 200 (2:39.40) also survived until 1984.
A versatile swimmer for Coach George Kropp for three years, she also swam the 50-free, 100-free, 200-free and 500-free. She set records in each of those events and still ranks among the top times in each event. Hill Hutson was also part of Towson’s record-setting 200 medley relay team. She joined Sue Schindler, Jane Lehmkuhl and Carol Dalcin as part of the team that posted a 1:56.30 time in 1978. She was also honored as Towson’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1977 and 1978.
After graduating, Hill Hutson taught elementary school physical education in Harford County and worked as a Maryland Swimming and Diving official.
