Hall of Fame
One of the most versatile student-athletes in the history of the Towson athletic program, Joe Tischer '59 was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1998.
He lettered in five different sports in his college career. In addition, he was a starter for four of those teams.
As a freshman, he was a member of the track and cross country teams. In his sophomore year, he competed for the Tiger basketball and track teams. In his junior year, he was part of the soccer and indoor track teams as well as Towson’s first lacrosse team ever. As a senior, he played lacrosse and soccer.
A prominent businessman in Hagerstown, Md., he founded Tischer Associates, Inc., a general insurance agency with $10 million annual premiums.
The recipient of Towson’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991, he established three scholarship endowments at Towson. In addition, he was elected as a member of Towson University Foundation Board of Directors in 1993.
The founding president and former vice-president of Dream Come True, Inc., a charitable organization that grants the wishes of terminally ill children, he completed in triathlon competitions in Hawaii and New Zealand. A member of the Greater Hagerstown Committee, he was a past chairman of the Washington County March of Dimes and served on the advisory and consulting boards of many insurance companies.
