One of the top defensive players ever to play for the Tigers, Lance Johnson '93 was inducted into the Tiger Hall of Fame in 2003.

Johnson was a four-year starter at sweeper. A team co-captain as a junior and a senior, the Mount Laurel, N.J., native was a key performer for Towson’s three consecutive East Coach Conference championship teams.

In 1989, he was the Tigers’ Freshman of the Year after he started all 19 games and led Towson to a 12-6-1 record and its first ECC title. In his sophomore season, he was named first team All-ECCC. He helped the Tigers post a 12-6-2 record and a first place finish in the ECC standings. Towson and Drexel were ECC co-champions when they played to a tie in the championship game.

As a junior, Johnson fought through an injury-plagued season but helped Towson win its third straight ECC crown. He was also named as the Defensive Most Valuable Player at the East Stroudsburg Tournament after leading the Tigers to the championship. The 1991 Tigers set a school record with 14 victories.

In his senior season, he was the team’s Most Valuable Player as Towson went 9-9-1 in its first year as a member of the Big South Conference.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Johnson began a long career as an indoor soccer player for the Baltimore Blast. He played for 11 years before retiring in April, 2003.

The team co-captain from 1996-2003, he led the Blast to the Major Soccer League championship in 2002. In 1993, he was named to the MSL All-Rookie Team. He was a member of the MSL all-star team four times during his career.

He and his wife Janine have a daughter, Brianna.
