Hall of Fame
A two-time first team All-East Coast Conference (ECC) selection, Chuck Lightening '92 was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 2003.
Lightening was a key member of Towson’s three straight conference championship teams from 1990-92. As a sophomore, he was one of the top reserves on the Tigers’ first ECC championship team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament and played Oklahoma in the first round. He averaged 8.5 points per game off the bench and had a .502 field goal percentage.
In his junior year, he moved into a starting role and made first team All-ECC. Lightening averaged 16.1 points per game and led the Tigers in rebounding with a 6.3 average. He helped the Tigers win their second straight ECC championship, earning all-tournament honors.
In the championship game win over Rider, he made the biggest play of the game with 45 seconds left. With Towson clinging to a one-point lead, he made a steal and went the length of the court for a thunderous slam dunk that put Towson up by three points. Since the game was nationally televised on ESPN, the play got a lot of national attention.
In the NCAA Tournament against Ohio State, he scored a game-high 26 points in the Tigers' 97-86 loss. He was honored as the CBS-TV Player of the Game.
In his senior season, he earned his second straight first team All-ECC honors as he helped the Tigers win their third straight ECC title. That year, he averaged 18.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. For the second year in a row, he was named to the ECC Tournament all-tourney team.
A 1992 graduate with a degree in business administration, Lightening finished his career with 1305 points. A native of Silver Spring, Md., he worked as a mortgage banker.
